Rolland’s Life

My Life

PC’s SUX!!!!!

I so want to be back on my Mac all the time. Only thing I like on the pc so far is One Note & Quicken. I have a brand new 4 gig’r PC and it runs like syrup on a cold morning! This thing is frustrating, like I am back in 1989. Here are just a couple things;

  • Can’t run more then 3 things at a time or the whole system goes into slowmo.
  • Have to restart/reboot it at least twice a day.
  • Put it to sleep, and it wakes itself up for nothing and then stays on. So if you put it in case, it wakes up and super heats itself doing nothing. This is really driving me nuts.
  • Vista seems like an okay OS, but it is so damn slow and runs at like 85-90% resources most of the time. No wonder I can’t get anything done with this thing.

It is no wonder that no one can ever get anything done on time. They are stuck in the never ending battle of getting their tools to work.

One note by MS is I think the best program they make. It does what they say it will and does it pretty darn good. Same as Quicken, don’t know why the Mac version can’t. Course, I haven’t tried the latest version of Quicken for Mac, so maybe they got it fixed finally.

I like Outlook, but the Mac version which is called Entourage seems to have been stripped down from its Outlook cousin, again I ask … Why?

Guess I will keep trying with this thing till I can get my new Mac, and then I will make it do what I need no matter what and never look at this PC again. Oh how I miss my Mac. You forget how cool it is that when you open your laptop and everything just works feels like.

So, I was thinking

The Bible says ….

One thing I have been told over and over is that homosexuality is wrong, because the Bible says so. Of course, I have had the whole Old Testament vs. New Testament. Even had the talk about how come Jesus didn’t say anything about it. My point has always been that many people hide behind the Bible. They use it to defend their point of view. That the Bible has been re-written, translated more than any other words put to paper. Sure, everyone has their own opinion on it all. But, that is exactly it …. Just an opinion!

The issue of gay marriage is to many an equal rights issue. For the other side, well they claim it slaps their moral conviction. Course, they use the Bible to justify their position. So what is this whole thing about? Personally, I agree that it is human rights issue. While many people I know totally disagree with me. This issue has clearly strained my relationship with some, and in some cases caused irreparable harm to some. The Bible has been at the middle of this issue for so many people. It has divided families and friends from all over. So, this got me thinking. I have always held to my conviction that God is bigger than all of us. That if God is all knowing, the creator of everything, than why do we think for one second that we know what God wants or thinks? Funny thing about us humans is we have one hell of a high opinion of ourselves and our existence in this universe.

But let me get back to the Bible. The Bible is believed to be the definitive word of God. With only a handful of passages that men have inferred that homosexuality is a sin. Now for some reason millions of people accept this explanation and just regurgitate it to others in the name of religion and their belief structure. All because the Bible says so …. What else has the Bible said?

Attitudes towards slavery in the Bible

Slavery was sanctioned and carefully regulated by many passages in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) largely in the Pentateuch – its first 5 books. Although slavery was widespread in Palestine during Jesus’ ministry, he is not recorded as having expressed any opinion on it. Slavery was casually mentioned without criticism in the various books of the Christian Scriptures (New Testament). The authors appeared to accept slavery as a natural condition — as a universal institution that was not particularly immoral.

How the Bible was used to justify slavery:

The Christian church’s main justification of the concept of slavery is based on Genesis 9:25-27. According to the Bible, the worldwide flood had concluded and there were only 8 humans alive on earth: Noah, his wife, their six sons and daughters in law. Noah’s son Ham had seen “the nakedness of his father.” So, Noah laid a curse — not on Ham, who was guilty of some type of indiscretion. The sin was transferred to Noah’s grandson Canaan. Such transference of sin from a guilty to an innocent person or persons is unusual in the world’s religious and secular moral codes. It is normally considered highly unethical. However, it appears in many biblical passages. The curse extended to all of Canaan’s descendants:

Genesis 9:25-27:Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers. He also said, ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japeth live in the tents of Shem and may Canaan be his slave‘. “

Christians traditionally believed that Canaan had settled in Africa. The dark skin of Africans became associated with this “curse of Ham.“ Thus slavery of Africans became religiously justifiable. Author Anthony Pagden wrote:

“This reading of the Book of Genesis merged easily into a medieval iconographic tradition in which devils were always depicted as black. Later pseudo-scientific theories would be built around African skull shapes, dental structure, and body postures, in an attempt to find an unassailable argument–rooted in whatever the most persuasive contemporary idiom happened to be: law, theology, genealogy, or natural science — why one part of the human race should live in perpetual indebtedness to another.” 1

By today’s secular and religious standards:

slavery is immoral.

cursing all of an individual’s descendents into perpetual slavery because of an inappropriate act by an ancestor is immoral.

laying a curse on the son of the person who committed the act is immoral.

But in ancient times, cursing a whole race into slavery was considered acceptable because it was in the Bible. The American slave owner felt that he was carrying out God’s plan by buying and using slaves.

Slavery was also condoned and regulated in many passages of the in the Bible. There is no record of Jesus having commented on it. Paul had every opportunity to condemn slavery, particularly in his Epistle to Philemon. But he remained silent, except to urge slaves to be content with their lot and to obey their owners.

19th century quotations:

[Slavery] was established by decree of Almighty God…it is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation…it has existed in all ages, has been found among the people of the highest civilization, and in nations of the highest proficiency in the arts.” Jefferson Davis, President, Confederate States of America 1,2

The right of holding slaves is clearly established in the Holy Scriptures, both by precept and example.
Rev. R. Furman, D.D., a Baptist pastor from South Carolina. 3

I give my daughter, Joyce Falkner, present wife of John Falkner, of the county of Fayette and State of Virginia, a negro girl by name of Gemima otherwise called Mima. I give her to the above Joyce together with said Mima’s increase forever and for the only use of the said Joyce, to will and dispose of as to her seemeth fit, hereby revoking all other claims of right or title to the said Gemima alias Mima of her increase forever.” The 1791 will of Toliver Craig, disposing of his assets (and children of his assets) in the event of his death. 4

21st century quotation:

…the campaign to end slavery in the United States was for many years largely the work of a small number of Christians who opposed slavery on explicitly religious grounds and who at the time were regularly condemned as fanatical zealots, bent (as indeed they were) on imposing their religiously based views regarding this particular issue on all those who disagreed.” Paul Campos 5

Overview:

The Christian church’s main justification of the concept of slavery was based on the “curse of Ham“ which appears in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) in Genesis 9:25-27.

Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers. He also said, ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem.

Christians at the time believed that Canaan had settled in Africa and that his descendents had become black.

Although slavery was widespread in Palestine during Jesus’ ministry, the Christian Scriptures (New Testament) does not record his opinion of it. Slavery was casually mentioned without criticism in the various books of the Bible. It was accepted as a natural part of life by almost all Christians until the 19th century CE.

Anabaptists started to criticize slavery in the late 17th century. They were joined by Quakers and Mennonites. It was only when John Wesley (1703-1791), founder of the Methodist movement, became concerned about slavery that the small protest became a mass movement for the abolition of slavery.

Slavery is still advocated in North America by some Reconstructionist Christians and a few racist fringe groups within the Christian Identity movement.

So, tell me what you think? Can you stop for one minute and think about this? Is there any room for discussion? Let me know.

Called to get removed from Salvation Army mailing list

Let me get this straight. This place won’t help or employ anyone they know to be gay, but when you call them and ask them to be removed from their mailing campaign they tell you that giving is something everyone needs to do. I am so biting my tongue at this very moment!

Putz day

Diabetes SUX!

To be perfectly honest here, I still am at a lost with all this diabetes crap. Seems like when I make some head room all I get is more meds to take and more often. I swear I am getting poked and needled to death with this. Needless to say this is making today a bit of a putz day for me. I really want to get this under control and not let it run my life but it doesn’t seem to care what I want.

Post election depression

Spoke with my mom for a minute today. Wasn’t pretty by any stretch of the imagination. Not going to really say much about it on here, other then I hope everyone out there is having a better day.

Blogging & Work

Now, I realize I have not always been really good at keeping this thing updated as regularly I would like to. Even though I think I have improved somewhat. I am of course ADD as well and I am learning (or re-learning, all in how you look at it) that I have to have everything written down and on a calendar. One thing that has always bothered me about that is no one else I know has to do this. Not nearly to the degree I have to do it. But, I finally realized, I am not like everyone else. That having a calendar that looks like it exploded out of a crayon box is what does work for me and keeps me on track. This has been something that has bugged me for some time, but I just can’t keep thinking about it and just need to do it. All of this has lead me to put everything I do on my calendar with times to write on here as well as my work blog.

My work blog is a place more for clients and potential clients to get to know me as well keep up on trends and email marketing I am doing. Will be listing all of my listings on there as well. It is still in the development stage and hope to have it launched officially within the next couple of weeks.

Not much else to say at this point, please keep posting comments for me. Do love hearing from those that read what I have soap boxed about and such. Trying to add more content about me and the things I do or go through on a daily basis as well.

Marriage Ban passes FL, AZ, CA

The people have spoken

Not a big surprise that the bans all passed. Never was a question in Florida or Arizona. Course there was hope in California, but in the closing days it was looking terminal. So, what happens next? Good question and it is going to be interesting to see how each side gears up for round two. Granted the courts will get involved, as well as new tactics.

Overall it will be a back and forth fight for many years to come. Not sure that is earth shattering news to anyone. Stay tuned folks, its not over by a long shot. But I am glad this election is over! Maybe in the future we should pass a law that limits elections to the year they are voted on.

Projects, thoughts, now what should I do?

Find it pretty funny that I seem most the time flooded with ideas. Many never even get to the point of getting written down. In all honesty, most never get that far. But, I have learned that I need to stop doing that and just write them down and go back and dig through them at a later date. Instead of losing all these great idea to the far corners of this grey matter I call my mind.

Thinking I want to get a photo book published in the next 18 months or so. It is becoming clearer on what I want to do. Even though it is not completely clear at this moment, the lines are starting to not appear so fuzzy. Guess I am learning to write more down though as I have been putting the random thoughts of all this down.

The night before

It is the final night of the presidential election race! After tomorrow, the ads disappear and all hail the return of coke, bud light, and who knows with all the new drug ads they have been turning out. How quick will we know the results of this race? Will it be super close? With days of fighting going back and forth? Another race that will tear the country further apart. We will know in about 24 hours. Maybe the time really has come for some of us too really talk about and seriously considering leaving this country. Been said by many, if you don’t like it here, then just leave. Been thinking about this statement for some time now, (might surprise you who has told me this) and finally I coming to the realization that their statement as insensitive as it maybe, makes sense to me now. It isn’t all that complex of a concept. Why stay in a place that is unhappy or unhealthy to you? If you are allergic to salt water, I doubt anyone would tell you to tough it out and just deal with that oceanfront home. Most would tell you to sell it and move to somewhere that is better for you. The direction of this country and this current election screams of a place that is not good for me. Many have asked where else would you go. Course everyplace has something that we don’t like or agree with. But, it comes down to the simple fact of finding the place that rubs you the least. This country rubs me more than a few I could see myself living in. I am sure a few years ago I didn’t feel that way. Guess I grew up, and things changed too.

This is not a reaction to the election in either way to be honest with you. It is to the system, how the “majority” views and wants things to be. I am an idealist for sure, no doubt. I want and do believe in diversity, and humanity. Many religions claim to have this same belief, but … (always a but) within this guideline and that guideline. Definitions of who is included and who is not. Exclusivity in any form, usually (if not always) leads to trouble and doesn’t stop till it runs head-on into flat out wrong. Which only opens the door of justification, and the circle is formed and put into motion. It is like watching a snow ball rolling down a hill, picking up everything in its path, stuck to it till it hits the bottom and explodes. Everything that got caught up in its path gets thrown around, broken and destroyed.

Calif. gay-rights vote is second costliest

Hum….. What to say?  This has to be one of the most bullshit fights of all time.  The crap flowing from both sides is ridiculous.  Personally, I think this whole thing can easily be fixed by going back to the separation of church and state.  The state is not in the business of morality and it shouldnt be.  So, to fix this nice and easy is to make it so every person, every union, should be a domestic partnership.  They only reason the state issues “marriage license” is why?  It is a contract, plain and simple.

It is between two parties, that by their stated claim to enter into a partnership together they receieve certian rights and protections under the law.  Pretty damn simple if you think about it.  Marriage is an emotional and for many an issue or morality.  Again, pretty simple concept.  So, if the state is dealing with the legality of two, three, hell twenty for all I care individuals to enter into a protected legal arrangements, lets leave the concept of marriage in the walls of religious groups.  not like you cant find a church that wont marry anyone to anyone else.  The money that has been wasted on this and issues like this is stupid.  There is really no issue to be argued here.  Human rights have already been addressed in our constitution and the laws of this country.  Reality is the right to be equally protected under the laws of this nation have been clearly argued starting with that little tea party over there in Boston a few years ago.  Marriage is an institution that has been addressed, and created in the religious sect.  So be it, let the churches decide how they handle the entire concept.  Its not like it has anything to do with protections under the law.  that is a civil matter handled between the individuals and the state.  Anyone and everyone that wants the legal protections of their civil union should apply and receive a domestic partnership.  Want to get married, that is between the individuals and whatever church or group they choose to belong to.

This country is facing real problems and real issues, the time for serious discussion and decisions on these issues is here and needs to be addressed with serious action to solve these problems.  This mikey mouse, high school name calling fights are counter productive and have no place in a society of intellegence.
